Meaning and importance of citizenship education
Citizenship education teaches people their rights, duties and roles as members of a country. It helps young people become responsible, law-abiding citizens who take part in community and national life.
Acquiring and losing citizenship
A person becomes a Nigerian citizen by birth, registration or naturalisation, as set out in the 1999 Constitution. Citizenship can be lost through renunciation, when a citizen gives it up, or deprivation, when the government withdraws it.
Rights and responsibilities
| Rights of citizens | Responsibilities of citizens |
|---|---|
| Right to life | Obey the laws of the country |
| Right to freedom of expression | Pay taxes and rates |
| Right to vote and be voted for | Vote during elections |
| Right to education | Respect the rights of others |
Good citizenship and national development
When citizens obey the law, vote, pay taxes and protect public property, the country becomes peaceful and stable. This allows government to provide roads, schools and hospitals for everyone.
