Instructional materials

Samples of solids, liquids and gases (stone, water, an inflated balloon), pictures of plants and animals, a laboratory safety chart, and a JSS3 topic chart.

Discussion, demonstration, group work and guided questioning.

Revision of matter and energy

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It exists as solid, liquid or gas. Solids have a fixed shape and volume, liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container, and gases have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume.

Energy is the ability to do work. Its forms include heat, light, sound, electrical, chemical and mechanical energy. Energy can change from one form to another, for example a solar panel changes light energy to electrical energy.

Revision of classification

Classification is the grouping of things according to their similarities and differences. Living things are grouped into plants and animals. Animals are further grouped into vertebrates (with backbones, such as fish, birds and goats) and invertebrates (without backbones, such as snails, earthworms and insects).

Laboratory conduct and safety

Enter the laboratory only with the teacher’s permission.
Do not eat, drink or taste anything in the laboratory.
Report every accident, spill or breakage to the teacher at once.
Never smell chemicals directly; waft the air gently towards your nose.
Keep flammable materials away from flames.
Wash your hands after every practical and return equipment clean.

Introduction to JSS3 concepts

In JSS3 First Term, students will study ecosystems, natural resources, environmental hazards, environmental health, waste disposal and recycling, and sustainable development. These topics build on JSS2 work and prepare students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
