What is a Story?
Hello pupils! Today we will learn about storytelling — one of the oldest forms of communication and entertainment in Nigerian culture.
A story is a narrative of events, either real or imagined, presented in a particular order to entertain, inform, or convey a message to the audience. Stories often feature characters, settings, and plots that create an immersive experience for the audience.
Elements of a Story
1. Characters
The people or beings who inhabit the story and drive the action. Characters may be human, animal, or even imaginary.
2. Setting
The time and place in which the story takes place. The setting can be real or imaginary, and may include details about the environment, geography, culture, and historical context.
3. Plot
The sequence of events that make up the story. The plot includes the story’s conflict, rising action, climax, and resolution.
4. Conflict
The central problem or challenge that the characters must overcome. The conflict may be internal (within a character) or external (between characters, or between characters and their environment).
5. Theme
The underlying message or meaning of the story. Themes can be explicit or implicit, and may relate to issues such as love, justice, power, or freedom.
6. Tone
The attitude or emotional tone of the story. The tone may be serious, humorous, satirical, or ironic, among other possibilities.
7. Style
The manner in which the story is written or told. Style may include elements such as language, pacing, structure, and narrative techniques.

Sample Story: Obi and the Old Woman
Obi was a young man who lived in a small village in Nigeria. He was known for his kindness and his willingness to help others. One day, while he was walking through the village, he came across an old woman who was struggling to carry a heavy load of firewood on her head.
“Can I help you with that?” Obi asked the old woman. The old woman smiled gratefully and nodded her head. Obi lifted the load of firewood onto his own head and began to walk with the old woman.
As they walked, the old woman began to talk to Obi. “Thank you for your kindness, young man,” she said. “You remind me of my own son, who passed away many years ago.”
When they arrived at the old woman’s home, Obi helped her unload the firewood and stack it neatly. “Thank you, Obi,” the old woman said. “You have a good heart, and I know that you will go far in life.”
From that day on, Obi and the old woman became good friends. As the years went by, Obi grew older and wiser. He became a respected member of the community, known for his generosity and his kind heart.
