What is a State?

Hello pupils! Today we will learn about states.

A state is a region with its own government. This government makes laws for the state. It provides services like healthcare, education, and security. It also maintains order in the state.

Understanding States Better

Nigeria has many states. Some of these states are Lagos, Kano, and Rivers. Each state has a governor who leads it.

The governor ensures resources are used wisely. He takes care of the people living in the state.

States in Nigeria’s History

Before Nigeria became independent, it had regions. British administrators governed these regions. They maintained law and order.

A state is a territory with a government. This government makes laws, provides services, and maintains order.

Six Features of a State

1. Sovereignty

A state is sovereign. This means it makes its own laws. It governs itself without outside interference.

Example: Nigeria is sovereign. It makes laws without other countries telling it what to do.

2. Territory

Every state has territory. This includes land and water under its control.

Example: Lagos State has defined land and water areas it controls.

3. Government

States have governments. These governments make laws. They provide services and maintain order.

Example: Lagos State government makes laws for everyone in the state.

4. Population

States have people living in them. These people make up the population.

Example: Many people live in Lagos State.

5. Economy

States have economies. This includes businesses and industries.

Example: Lagos has many businesses and industries.

6. Military

States have military forces. These forces defend against threats.

Example: Nigeria’s military defends the country from enemies.

How to Find Lagos on the Map

Step 1: Find Nigeria on the map. Nigeria is in West Africa. It looks like a rectangle.

Step 2: Look at Nigeria’s borders. The Atlantic Ocean is south. Benin is west. Niger is north. Chad and Cameroon are east.

Step 3: Find southwestern Nigeria. Lagos State is located here. It is near the Atlantic Ocean.

Step 4: Look for a small peninsula. Lagos is Nigeria’s smallest state. Water surrounds it on three sides.

What “Lagos” Means

Location and Size

Lagos is a city in southwestern Nigeria. It is on the Atlantic coast. Lagos is one of 36 Nigerian states. The capital of Lagos State is Ikeja.

Historical Importance

Lagos was Nigeria’s capital before 1991. The capital then moved to Abuja.

Early Settlers

The Awori people founded Lagos. They were the first settlers. They built the early community.

Origin of the Name

“Lagos” comes from Portuguese. It means “lakes.” The Portuguese chose this name because Lagos has many lagoons and waterways.

Colonial History

Lagos was important during colonial times. The Portuguese came in the 15th century. The Dutch came later. The British eventually took control.

Role in Slave Trade

Lagos was a major slave trade port. But it also helped stop slavery in the 19th century.

Cultural Diversity

Lagos is very diverse. Yoruba, Igbo, and Edo people live there. Many other ethnic groups also call Lagos home.

Modern Lagos

Today, Lagos is Nigeria’s largest city. It is one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities. The economy is very strong.

Lagos’ Original Name: Eko

The Awori Name

The Awori people called Lagos “Eko.” This means “war camp” in their language. The area was a military settlement.

Connection to Benin Empire

Some historians have a different idea. They think the name came from the Benin Empire. The empire controlled this area in the 17th century.

The Portuguese Influence

Another idea is that the Portuguese named it “Lagos” in the 15th century. They chose this name because of the lagoons.

Rich History

No matter what the original name was, Lagos has a rich history. It helped shape Nigeria and West Africa.

Why Lagos State Was Created

The Creation Date

Lagos State was created on May 27, 1967. The military government divided Nigeria into 12 states at this time.

Reasons for Creation

The government wanted to spread power across Nigeria. They also wanted to help different regions develop. Creating states was the solution.

Before State Creation

Before 1967, Lagos was a federal territory. The federal government controlled it directly. This became difficult over time.

Population Growth

Lagos’ population grew very fast. This made it hard to govern from the federal capital. The area needed its own government.

Benefits of State Status

Creating Lagos State brought many benefits. It got its own government. This government could make decisions just for Lagos.

Size vs. Population

Lagos State is small in land size. But it has the most people. Over 20 million people live there now.

Economic Center

Lagos is Nigeria’s economic center. It has major industries in finance, media, and entertainment.

Understanding IBILE

IBILE is a special word. It is made from the first letters of five division names. Each letter stands for one division of Lagos State.

The Five Divisions

1. I – Ikeja
2. B – Badagry
3. I – Ikorodu
4. L – Lagos Island
5. E – Epe

When IBILE Was Created

These divisions started in 1968. General Yakubu Gowon created them. The goal was to make government work better. It also brought services closer to the people.

About Each Division

Ikeja

Ikeja is the state capital. It has the international airport called Murtala Muhammed Airport.

Lagos Island

Lagos Island is the commercial center. It has many banks and businesses. The National Museum is also here.

Badagry

Badagry has important historical sites. It was a major area during slave trade times. Many monuments are there.

Ikorodu

Ikorodu is in eastern Lagos. It is a growing area. Many people live and work there.

Epe

Epe has beautiful beaches. It attracts many tourists. Fishing is also an important activity there.

Lagos State Logo Colors

1. Blue Color

Blue represents water. Lagos has many lagoons and the Atlantic Ocean. These water bodies shaped Lagos’ history and development.

2. Yellow Color

Yellow means prosperity and wealth. Lagos is Nigeria’s economic center. It has many businesses and industries that make money.

3. Green Color

Green represents nature and plants. Lagos has parks and gardens. It also shows the state cares about the environment.

4. White Color

White means peace and unity. Lagos is diverse. Different ethnic groups and religions live together in harmony.

What Some Governors Did for Lagos

Mobolaji Johnson (1967-1975)

He was the first governor. He helped establish Lagos State. He worked to develop roads and buildings. He laid the foundation for modern Lagos.

Lateef Jakande (1979-1983)

He built many low-cost houses for people. He also built schools and hospitals. Living standards improved under his leadership.

Bola Tinubu (1999-2007)

He transformed Lagos into a modern city. He created LASTMA to control traffic. He also started the Security Trust Fund to make Lagos safer.

Babatunde Fashola (2007-2015)

He continued improving Lagos. He worked on infrastructure like roads and bridges. He improved healthcare, education, and security.

Akinwunmi Ambode (2015-2019)

He focused on transportation. He built better roads and bridges. He also created more jobs for people in Lagos.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu (2019-present)

He provides free healthcare for children under five. The elderly also get free treatment. He continues to improve roads and transportation in Lagos.

Two Main Title Holders

1. Idejo Chiefs

Idejo chiefs are the highest-ranking traditional chiefs in Lagos. They give advice to the Oba of Lagos. They are also kingmakers in the traditional Lagos system.

2. White Cap Chiefs

White Cap chiefs are the second highest-ranking chiefs. They help the Idejo chiefs advise the Oba. They also help maintain Lagos cultural traditions.

Important Title Holders in Lagos

• Oba Rilwan Akiolu I: The current Oba of Lagos. He was installed in 2003. He is the 21st Oba of Lagos.
• Chief Adekunle Alli: An important Idejo chief. He helped establish Lagos State University.
• Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi: A former White Cap chief. He was a famous playwright and author.
• Chief Fatai Lawal: A former Idejo chief. He promoted sports in Lagos State.
• Chief Mrs. Taiwo Taiwo: The first female White Cap chief. She was installed in 2017.

1. Advising the Oba

They give advice to the Oba of Lagos. The Oba protects Lagos culture and traditions. Title holders help him make important decisions.

2. Preserving Culture

They preserve Lagos traditions and customs. They make sure these traditions pass to the next generation.
