Content Summary

Meaning of Science:

Science can be defined as the knowledge obtained by observation and testing of facts. It is the knowledge about the structure and behavior of the natural and physical world based on facts that can be proven through experiments. Science is also the systematic process of making enquiry about the living and non-living things in our environment.

Basic Science:

Basic science is an integrated science course that deals with the study of living things and non-living things. It combines all other science subjects such as physics, biology, health science, agricultural science, geography, etc. The knowledge obtained through science is applied systematically to provide our various needs – this is called technology.

Scientific Method:

Methods or processes used by scientists to solve scientific problems include:

1. Asking Questions: Scientists ask questions to get accurate information (e.g., What makes a car move?)
2. Observing: Looking carefully to find out more information about things
3. Recording: Writing down observations to preserve and share discoveries
4. Experimenting: Carrying out tests to study what happens and gain new knowledge
5. Sorting Things Out: Classifying things by colours, sizes, shapes, etc.
6. Making Hypothesis: Making educated guesses based on available information
7. Identifying Problems: Recognizing and stating what the problem is
8. Drawing Conclusions: Making decisions based on all available information

Branches of Science:

• Medical Science: Deals with illness, injuries, and their treatment
• Agriculture: The science and practice of farming
• Engineering: Applying scientific knowledge to design, build and control machines, roads, bridges
• Social Science: The study of people in society (geography, economics, etc.)
• Political Science: The study of government and politics
