What is Energy?
Hello pupils! Today we will learn about energy.
Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. It can take many forms, such as heat, light, or motion.
For example: When you ride a bike, your body uses energy to make the wheels move. When you turn on a light, the energy from electricity makes the light bulb glow.
Energy is all around us and we use it every day!
Forms of Energy
1. Solar Energy
This is energy that comes from the sun. It can be used to heat our homes and to generate electricity. The sun gives us light and warmth.
2. Mechanical Energy
This is the energy of movement. It can be found in things like wind, water, and our own bodies when we move or do work.
3. Chemical Energy
This energy can be found in things like food, fuel, and batteries. When you eat food, your body converts the chemical energy into energy you can use.
4. Thermal Energy
This is the energy of heat. It can be found in things like the warmth from the sun, a campfire, or a hot cup of cocoa.
5. Electrical Energy
This is energy that comes from electricity. It can be found in things like light bulbs, computers, and electric cars.

What is Light Energy?
Light energy is a type of energy that travels in the form of waves and allows us to see things.
It is the energy that comes from the sun, light bulbs, and other light sources. Without light energy, we wouldn’t be able to see anything!
When we see an object, what we are really seeing is the light energy that is reflecting off of it.
For example: When we see a red apple, it’s because the apple is reflecting red light energy and absorbing other colors of light energy.
Light energy travels very fast – so fast that it is hard for us to imagine!
Evaluation Questions
- Explain what light energy is.
